I build backends that have to hold up under real traffic. By day that's Java and Spring services at TELUS, where my team ships its own changes all the way to production. On my own time I build AI products end to end, from the LLM pipeline to the Terraform underneath. Off the keyboard I'm a dad of twin boys, I play drums and guitar, and I make 3D models when the house is quiet.

Experience

► TELUS Digital

[Jun 2022 – Present]

Backend Software Engineer

Recommendation engine

[Mar 2025 – Present]
  • I develop and maintain TELUS's recommendation engine, built on the TM Forum TMF680 API, in Java and Spring Boot. It decides which offers and promotions TELUS and Koodo customers see for mobility and home services, at about 40M requests a month.
  • Built a new microservice for the company's real-time offers push. It pulls offers from a new upstream API, merges them with the regular catalog and ranks the result, so offers can react to what a customer just did.
  • There's no separate DevOps team, so I take my own tickets from code to Cloud Deploy releases on GKE and watch them in Dynatrace. I also cover on-call for Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the holidays.

TELUS Health, claims adjudication

[Feb 2023 – Mar 2025]
  • Worked on the engine that decides every insurance claim for TELUS Health in Canada: eligibility, deductibles, coverage percentages. I learned Canadian insurance rules from zero and turned them into tested Java and Spring Boot services talking SOAP and REST to Oracle.

Zimbra Collaboration Suite

[Jun 2022 – Feb 2023]
  • Built Java command-line tools that moved customers off third-party plugins and onto Zimbra's own native features.

► Freelance

[Feb 2026 – Present]

Software Engineer

  • Building Rori and the EOPLAT platform. Contract work, from architecture to production.

► University IT

[Sep 2020 – Jun 2022]

Full Stack Developer & Network Administrator, Universidad de El Salvador

  • Kept a campus running: modernized its Java EE web systems and ran the networks, phones (Asterisk), DNS, mail, Moodle and Docker-hosted apps on Linux. Promoted from assistant to manager in July 2021.

Projects

► Rori

[Closed beta]

AI review of medical records, built with a physician co-founder and now in closed beta with a medical group.

Doctors doing workers' compensation reviews get thousands of scanned pages per patient. Rori splits them into individual records, dates and categorizes each one, and writes the summaries. Then the same agent behind its chat builds the patient's medical chart: an overview, demographics, medications, diagnoses, allergies and more. A 667-page test case comes back as 141 summarized records, with no failed calls.

  • Async pipeline on Java 25 virtual threads: Textract OCR, then LLM indexing and summaries, each checked by a second QA pass.
  • One LLM layer over Gemini, Claude and NVIDIA NIM, with retries, backoff and fallback to a second model when rate-limited.
  • Cut pipeline cost by 62%, to under $0.01 a page, with a model change and explicit context caching.
  • "Ask Rori" is a streaming chat agent that answers from the patient's records and cites them, and every citation is checked against records the user owns.
  • AWS with Terraform (ECS, Lambda, Aurora DSQL, Cognito, S3, KMS), GitHub Actions over OIDC, 700+ tests.
Stack
Java, Spring Boot, Spring AI, React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, Vertex AI

► EOPLAT

[Live]
EOPLAT home page: missionaries holding certificates under the headline Descubriendo caminos innovadores hacia los menos alcanzados

A web platform for a nonprofit that sends missionaries across Latin America.

Their site was a 9-year-old WordPress install. With one junior developer, I rebuilt it and designed their new visual identity. Since then it has grown from a website into the platform their staff use every day.

  • Static Next.js site with Sanity CMS on Cloudflare Pages, plus a serverless AWS backend (Lambda, Cognito, DynamoDB, SST) for mission sign-ups.
  • A missionary management module the staff use daily: encrypted documents and alerts before passports and visas expire.
  • A private HumHub network for missionaries and donors, with accounts created on admin approval.
Stack
Next.js, Sanity, AWS Lambda, Cognito, DynamoDB, SST

Legacy Systems

Earlier apps, now retired. WiMouse and Webcam4all reached about 150K downloads together, paid for by ads and Pro upgrades.

Webcam4all
